Katie's Hope Story

Katie is no stranger to hardship.

Both of Katie’s parents died when she and her brother were young, so their grandmother took them in and cared for them as best she could.  She owned a small business, selling sugar, rice, and other food products; but her income was not enough to feed the family.

“Sometimes we would eat, sometimes not,” Katie recalls.

One day thieves came and stole all of business’ merchandise.  Katie’s grandmother lost all of her merchandise.  This tragedy put the family into a state of desperation.  With no money to rebuild, they were near despair and needed help.  A nun at the Catholic school that Katie attended took notice of her situation and put her in touch with the Haiti Children’s Village in Cap-Haitien.  Katie came to live at the village when she was seven.

Because Katie was used to providing for herself, she found it hard to adjust and was often caught stealing.  Yet her house parents continued to love and guide her and she began to adapt to her new home.  She enjoyed playing with the other children and was grateful for three meals a day.  While Katie sees the importance of family, food, shelter, and education, all of which she was blessed with at the village; she is most thankful for the opportunity to grow up knowing Jesus.  Her favourite Bible story is of Abraham and Sarah, because God gave Sarah a baby despite the odds.

“Nothing is impossible with God,” she says.

Still connected with the ministry she grew up in, today Katie is a role model to many of the younger children.  She is studying the culinary arts at a trade school and hopes someday to open a restaurant and use it to bless the children’s village.  Katie also hopes to adopt some children and pour into their lives in the same way that the village poured into her own life.  She has a passion to share the gospel and the good news of the Lord.
