Guatemala Update - May 2018

Overview of Progress

With its lush forests, Mayan ruins, and active volcanoes Guatemala (“land of the trees”) is an achingly beautiful country, and the most populous in Central America. Yet despite its beauty and rich culture, Guatemala is a country overwhelmed with extreme poverty, malnutrition, crime, and social inequality. Over 68% of all Guatemalan children under age 18 live below the poverty line, and face a daily struggle to survive, eat, learn and grow in a safe environment.

We’re working with indigenous communities where children bear the brunt of grinding poverty, human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Thanks to your support, our partner Kids Alive Guatemala, is working with these kids and providing healing, hope and justice.

Rejected and Broken No More

Mateo* worked hard to give the impression of intimidation and rebellion. Hardened by a tough life and robbed of an innocent childhood, Mateo didn’t want to show any weakness. He was a survivor and trusted nobody but himself. However, despite his best efforts, beneath that tough exterior was a broken young man. Rejected by his mother, and having never met his father, Mateo ached for a sense of family and belonging. That search for family falsely lured him to associate with a local street gang. It was at this crisis point when he finally came to our supported project, Source for Hope School, in Guatemala.

Thanks to your generous support, Mateo is receiving the individual attention and counselling he needs for the first time in his life. He is starting to understand that his life has value. For the first time he is learning about a God that loves him and will never abandon him; that he is a child of God, and his past does not define him. No longer left to fend for himself, Mateo is surrounded by caring people and has found a new family in his teachers, the staff and his fellow students.

Today, Mateo has walked away from his gang involvement. He knows there is a God who loves him, and he is not alone. You are one of the reasons why Mateo has found hope! Your gift is making a huge impact in the lives of kids just like Mateo.

*The name Mateo has been changed to protect the identity of the child.

Give Thanks

  • 15 girls were baptized at Oasis
  • 100% of Oasis girls passed their grade, 54% with 80+ average.
  • Hosted training for 114 judges, prosecutors, and workers in the child care system.
  • Established a community outreach program in Zapote, where Source for Hope School is located. This program is helping impoverished families from corn to sell, and allows them to provide an income for their families.

Prayer Requests

  • Safety for staff and workers as they minister amongst the girls from high-risk situations.
  • Discernment and wisdom for the new community outreach program, as the ministry leaders work towards creating self-sufficiency for the families.
  • Spiritual growth and healing for the children who are in difficult situations, and wisdom for the staff who work with them.

Goals

  • Launch an Oasis foster family program.
  • Expand the community outreach program in Zapote. This will enable families to lift themselves out of the devastating poverty and come to know Jesus.
