Reflections on Burkina Faso

Reflections on Burkina Faso

Tim visited our newest project, The Gampela Centre in Burkina Faso in April, and witnessed first-hand the life changing impact that the project is having in the lives of the people from that community.

In April I traveled to Africa, visiting Hope Story’s newest partnerships in Zambia and Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso is located on the southern cusp of the Sahara desert where the African continent turns a dusty brown. It was hot when I visited– an avg of 40˚C/105˚F. Most people farm, earning less than $2/day. Fewer than one in three children finish primary school.

I was greeted at the airport by John Tandamba, a man with a quick wit and a ready smile. Raised a Muslim, John accepted Christ in his teenage years and went on to become a pastor. Ten years ago, John bought a desolate piece of land in view of establishing “community education that is centred on Christ.” Today, with the help of Canadian and US donors, John has built a church,a training centre for Burkinabe pastors, and the Gampela primary and high schoolfor 350 kids. We're privileged to now be a part of this story.

One afternoon, John asked me to speak to a group of widows who have children enrolled at the School. Being a widow in Sub-Saharan Africa can be incredibly difficult. In the wake of her husband’s death, a woman often finds herself at the mercy of in-laws who claim all rights to finances and property. In some societies, she is expected to sleep with a brother-in-law or even a stranger to ‘cleanse’ her supposed impurities.

What to share with a group of women who have borne such hardship? I didn’t pretend to know. To weary nods, I spoke to the difficulties they had endured. We serve a God who does not promise ease or happiness in this life. What he does offer is his presence – Emmanuel, God with us. Over and over again in scripture, God professes his love for the orphan, and for the widow. I prayed that the church would surround them and bring comfort...

...Keeping in mind James 2:16.
