Pierre's Story

Pierre's Story

At the age of 10 Young Pierre was desperate. After losing everything in the 2010 earthquake, he fled Haiti with an older brother and soon found himself begging on the streets before he was taken into care with Dominican child protective services. He had no home, no school and no formal education. He didn’t even speak Spanish. Pierre found his way to the Ark in Jarabacoa, one of our Kids Alive partner sites. He was placed in a home with other Haitian refugees. There he received Spanish tutoring and despite being behind, proved to be a quick study. Before long, he enrolled in the regular school program where he excelled at his studies.

At the same time, Pierre was studying the Bible at the Ark and learning about Jesus. One night after reading a devotion he decided to make a personal commitment to Christ, and in 2016, he made the decision to be baptized.

This past school year, he was elected class president of the sophomore class at his local high school. This is a huge feat because of his Haitian background, as Haitians often face discrimination. However, “Pierre is a natural servant. If he sees work to do, he helps do it,” says the director of the Ark. “He is also very sentimental and sheds tears of compassion for others.” Besides being a good soccer player, he is also a good cook. He dreams of finishing high school and continuing with his studies by going to culinary school to become a chef. Pierre has a bright future ahead of him!

Thank you for supporting children like Pierre. Rising from the literal ashes, Pierre has grown spiritually, socially, academically, and is seizing opportunities for the future.
