The Vision of Tiempo de Paz

The Vision of Tiempo de Paz

The Vision of Tiempo de Paz

Medellin, Colombia was, for a time, considered the most dangerous city in the world. At its peak, the Medellin Cartel, headed by Pablo Escobar, was the world’s largest drug dealer. While the Cartel no longer terrorizes the people of Medellin, its legacy of drugs, gangs, addiction and violence lives on. Nowhere is this truer than in poor neighbourhoods, where gangs “tax” small businesses and impose evening curfews on city residents, maintaining their dark omnipresence.

One of the greatest tragedies is how gang life metastases into kids’ lives. Most children are sucked into the prevailing drug culture by the age of nine. They grow up in single parent homes, where mom works full-time and is unable to provide supervision or guidance. These children are also much more likely to suffer from malnutrition or sexual abuse. In the midst of such uncertainty, gangs provide a sense of belonging and family.

Cenfol, a local church, established Tiempo de Paz with a vision to provide vulnerable kids with an alternative lifestyle – a place where kids learn new skills, receive counselling, and are encouraged in their studies. A place where they learn about God’s love, and God’s family.

This Giving Tuesday, will you partner with Hope Story and Tiempo de Paz and make this vision a reality?
