Josue's Story

Josue is 13 years old. He and his family face a challenge that has become all too real to many Colombians. His mother and father work long hours in jobs they are overqualified for, just to pay rent in one of Medellin’s poorest neighbourhoods.

Josue and his parents are Colombian, but they moved to Venezuela for work when Josue was young. During this time, Josue’s mom earned a university degree. Sadly, the Venezuelan economy has disintegrated in recent years, and Josue and his family were forced to return to Colombia. His father now works as a gardener, and his mother is employed as a nanny. Both of them must travel far from the impoverished neighbourhood of San Javier, where they live.

After breakfast, Josue arrives at Tiempo de Paz by 8:00am. Over the next four hours he enjoys time with friends, learning about Jesus, and brushing up on his computer skills. He then goes to school from 12:00pm – 6:00pm, after which he arrives home and makes dinner for himself, because mom and dad aren’t yet home from work.

For Josue and his parents, Tiempo de Paz is a safe haven. It protects him from being out in the streets, and insulates him from the violence and temptation of gang culture. Josue’s dream is to be a professional soccer player. But if that doesn’t work out, he says he’d consider a career in graphic design or architecture.

The Centre in San Javier provides Josue with an opportunity to pursue his dreams. Because of the love of Jesus and his people, Josue knows his story has only just begun.
