A Surprise Letter

A Surprise Letter

Tarek is from Lebanon. He had a difficult start to life. At the age of three he was abandoned by his parents at a partner children’s centre in Lebanon with no papers. Tarek was completely alone. But not for long. As Tarek shared with us in 2015, “I have always felt like I belonged to a family – to my brothers and sisters at Dar el Awlad, and to my church. I belong to the Kingdom of God. Not to Iraq, not to Iran – but to the Kingdom of God!” Tarek became a youth leader in his church, and speaks with great passion about what his faith has done for him. Hope Story’s scholarship fund made it possible for Tarek to attend university.

We were thrilled to receive this letter from Tarek just a couple of weeks ago - here is some of that letter, exactly as he wrote it to us:

“Dear Tim,

It is with thankfulness, joy, and a prayerful spirit that I send you this letter. I am thankful for all the years of support that Hope Story has shown me. I am joyful for where I stand now; it is in no small part because of Hope Story’s blessing to my life. Finally, I pray that others may benefit from that same blessing, and that all our futures will be in ‘God’s will for us in Christ Jesus.’

Over the past three and a half years, Hope Story has been a devoted and unyielding supporter of my education. Not only did you provide finances, but also encouragement, follow-up, and prayers; a holistic approach, I must add. Three and a half years is both a long and a short time. It is long as so much could (and did) happen. I started university, changed houses, worked in different ministries, got to travel, and - the highlight - got married.

However, three and a half years is a short time to express the depth of gratitude due. After all, what can a beneficiary do but thank, in the meantime, and pay it forward, when able?

“A joyful spirit is evidence of a grateful heart”. The famous American poet Maya Angelou wrote this, and I couldn’t agree more with her. I thank God for where I am now: on the trajectory of being an empowered and an empowering member of the world, and of God’s kingdom. . I am joyful for your involvement in my (and many others’) life. It is said: “It takes a village to raise a child.” Although I am no longer a child, I realize the effort, patience, and hard work it took you being part of my raising. I rejoice in that.

My prayer is that your ministry will continue to flourish, and that your stewardship over these resources will continue to be guided by wise, God fearing, hearts. Moreover, I give praise to God our father as he takes care of every young woman and man that you will invest in. Furthermore, I pray that you will continue to ‘win favor and a good name’ in the sight of your supporters. To that end, I am offering my assistance to Hope Story as you see fit.

...

With an appreciative and thankful heart,

Tarek
