The Costs of Education in Kenya

At the primary level, students must pay for uniforms and supplies. At the secondary level, there is the additional cost of transportation, boarding, and a portion of tuition. Some of these children are qualifying for university, while others are prepared for the workforce through college or an internship. For many orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya, the clock is ticking. Right now, over 100 Kenyan children are in need of Education Sponsorship.

As an Education Sponsor...

You will receive photos of your child, birthday notifications, updates on school grades, and the opportunity to write letters of encouragement (especially when your sponsored child has a big exam approaching). Many sponsors have even visited the child they support!

What is the Actual Impact?

The first five children to pursue post-secondary education became a banker, a teacher, an electrician, an auto mechanic, and a hairdresser. Each one is now successfully employed in the community and supporting themselves (and in some cases, their families)! We keep up to date on the particular interests and progress of the child you are supporting. As of today, 29 children have graduated from a college, university, or diploma program. Seventeen have entered the workforce. Others are engaged in an internship or are seeking meaningful employment. By supporting this program, you are making a real difference - in fact, you are transforming a child's life - opening up possibilities for growth and development that will reverberate for decades.

After many years of sponsorship, Willi, pictured above in 2010 and 2018, has just graduated from the Masai Technical Institute with a three-year certificate in Supply Chain Management! Willi, we are so proud of you!

A Glimpse into Willi's Life

When Willi was just 8 years old, his mother passed away. He recalls a difficult memory after his mother had passed: alone with his six-year-old sister and 9-month old brother in the slums their baby brother began to cry and cry. He and his sister tried, again and again, to soothe the baby in every way they knew how, but they could not figure out how to soothe him. Hungry, weak, sad, and so overwhelmed, he recalls himself and his sister breaking down - the two children fell onto the dirt and began to cry uncontrollably beside the stressed baby. Willi had never attended school and often had just one meal a day. Willi was eventually sent to live with his grandparents, where he and his siblings joined six of their cousins, and there too hunger remained a serious problem. Eventually, Willi was sponsored, and received support, allowing his basic needs to be met, and his school fees to be paid. In his own words, Willi said in August of 2019, "sharing with you the painful part of my story, I thank you, sponsors, back in Canada... you are giving us a good life. We are now beneficial to the society - we are doing different causes and can help the rest...Please, when you do good, the Lord will not be blind... I feel humbled and so thankful for what you have done upon my life."

How it Works

Each child's educational needs are unique, and the cost of educating a child varies based on academic achievement and program pursued. In order to maintain a predictable cost, low administration fees, and a dependable source of support, we have averaged out and standardized the sponsorship amount. Depending on the age and stage of your child, their education costs may be slightly less or more than the sponsorship amount. This policy benefits all of the children including your sponsored child, ensuring each child is able to achieve their full potential. The child's academic achievement and personal interests, influence the school they attend, which also means the education costs fluctuate from child to child. In order to maintain predictability of cost for sponsors, low administration fees, and reliability for the students, the children's education costs are averaged in order to arrive at the monthly sponsorship amount needed. Depending on the stage of your child's education, their education costs may be less or more than the sponsorship amount. This policy benefits all of the children including your sponsored child, ensuring each child can achieve their full potential.
