Reasons to Give

The vulnerable children and families receiving this gift do not have access to or cannot afford electricity.

The daily operation of a Kerosene lantern is expensive, and most families cannot afford this luxury. Used regularly, the fuel alone can cost over $150 CAD per year for one lamp.

Fuel based lanterns emit fumes and lead to accidents.

Lighting in the home supports a family in many ways, allowing cooking, cleaning, and reading after dark.

A word from our matching donors:

“We take access to light for granted in Canada, but in many parts of the world where there is no electricity, light depends on oil lamps, candles or waiting for the sun to come up. A solar powered lantern that lasts many hours allows children the chance to do their homework after 6 pm and excel in schooling and spiritual disciplines where they could not before. This is truly life-changing and we can provide this change in their life for just $20. We are excited that Hope Story wants to help in this way and we agreed to match every light donated with another light until together we reach our goal of 1250 lights.
In our pilot of this outreach, we found the lights to have a positive impact on the lives of the children receiving them.

Here is Helena's Story

“My name is Helena and I am in grade 5. I live very far from school. It’s 17 km each way and when I get back home, I help my parents with work. When I grow up, I want to be a nurse. I believe I will achieve my dream. Thank you for the solar lamp. Now I am able to do my homework on time and at the same time it helps my youngest sister to sleep because she is scared of the dark. I am getting the best education... God bless you all for making my learning experience possible.”
Helena doesn’t get home from school until 5 or 6 p.m. First, she has to work on the farm, before holding their only flashlight while her mom prepares dinner. She often can’t start her homework until 10 or 11 p.m. “This light means that I can work on my homework while Mom preps dinner,” Helena told us.

Solar Lights for Kids

To deliver 1250 lights, we need $25,000, but thanks to the support of our matching donors, we can reach this goal by raising just $12,500! That means a gift of $100 will give 10 children the light they need this school year.
