MEC’s Impact on Young Minds

By December 2024, the Centre had reached 90% of its enrollment target, with attendance rates at 85%. Furthermore, 75% of learners are meeting grade-level expectations in literacy, proof of the dedication and hard work being poured into these young minds.

For preschool children aged 5 to 6, MEC offers special reading classes to help those who haven’t found a place in Grade 1 elsewhere. In addition to academic support, the Centre runs tailoring and computer skills programs, empowering men, women, and youth with skills that can open doors to new opportunities. The tailoring program saw 10 out of 13 students graduate in 2024, while the computer classes provide essential technological skills for future employment.

The Centre also supports older students with homework assistance for Grade 9 and Grade 12 students, helping them prepare for exams. In 2024, many of these students successfully passed their exams. For younger children, MEC offered an exciting opportunity—preschoolers and Grade 1 students visited Kinako Game Ranch, where they learned about animals and celebrated Independence Day with a joyous party.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. The lack of reliable electricity continues to disrupt the computer skills classes, as power outages create uncertainty and hinder learning. Thankfully, a generous private donation will support MEC in securing an alternative power source, ensuring a more stable power supply and uninterrupted learning for students.

On a broader scale, the region has seen positive changes. After a long drought, steady rainfall has brought hope for a better harvest ahead. Although the rain hasn’t fully alleviated the community’s hunger challenges, it provides relief and optimism. Additionally, the town has undergone infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a 1.8 km dual carriageway, easing traffic flow and improving access within the town.

While Zambia’s economy is growing, the rising cost of living is a significant concern for families. The benefits of economic growth are overshadowed by the financial strain that makes it harder for families to meet basic needs like education and healthcare. Despite these challenges, MEC continues to work tirelessly to provide resources and opportunities to help the community thrive.

Prayer Requests:
  • Praise God for the rain that is needed to nourish the land, heal the soil, and provide a bountiful harvest in the coming season.
  • Pray that God’s wisdom and guidance surround the MEC staff and church leadership, granting them clarity to make decisions that serve the community and compassion to lead with love and integrity.
  • Pray for God’s provision for the families who are struggling during this time of scarcity and hunger; strengthen the hands of those working to meet their needs.
